Maureen O'hara..........................From her first appearances on the stage and screen Maureen O'Hara (b. 1920) commanded attention with her beautiful beauty and radiant red hair and impassioned characters of passionate heroines. Her charmed audience members with her effortless confidence and strong presence, no matter if she was rescued from the Gallows (The Hunchback of Notre Dame in 1939) and falling for Walter Pidgeon under a coal blackened scene in 1941 (How Green Was My Valley), or learning to believe in miracles along with Natalie Wood (Miracle on 34th Street in 1947). Maureen O'Hara was the first biography written about the screen icon, known as the Queen of Technicolor. Aubrey Malone traces the life of the screen legend, from Dublin, where she grew as a child, up to the heights of Hollywood. The author draws on the Irish Film Institute production notes for film productions along with old magazines and newspapers. Malone also examines her relationship with frequent co-star John Wayne and her relationship with director John Ford and he addresses the much-discussed issue about whether the screen goddess was a feminist or antifeminist persona. She was always a mysterious figure, despite being an iconic icon of golden-age cinema. The actress was famous for her secretive nature and controversial public statements which were against her personal beliefs. The first biography to reveal the real woman that was the real woman behind her larger than life image, this book dispels legends and offers a fair review of one of the most popular stars of the cinema.
